Those who do not follow international news media especially closely may be unaware of the difficulties that have been faced by Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas since the publication of the controversial Goldstone report on the Gaza conflict. Apparently responding to American pressure, the PA declined to press for the report to be discussed at the UN Security Council, which body could in turn have asked the International Criminal Court to initiate war-crimes proceedings.

Subsequently, Abbas has found himself the target of anger. “In Gaza hundreds of posters of Mr Abbas with a black X across his face appeared in public places, and relatives of the victims of the winter’s military operation were throwing shoes at his picture, a reference to the shoe hurled in contempt at the then American president, George Bush, in Iraq.” Not a good sign….

Both the Economist and the BBC have the story.

The Wall Street Journal editorial page this morning has given space to Dr. Sheikh Ali Gomaa, Grand Mufti of Egypt. Highlights:

“We have promoted the common ground that exists between Islam, Christianity and Judaism….”

“As the head of the one of the foremost Islamic authorities in the world, let me restate: The murder of civilians is a crime against humanity and God punishable in this life and the next.”

“Israel’s occupation of Palestine must be brought to an end; its continuation is an affront to the fundamental tenets of justice and freedom that we all seek to uphold. In Iraq and Afghanistan, full sovereignty and independence must be restored to their people with the withdrawal of all foreign forces. President Barack Obama’s historic address to the Muslim world from Cairo on June 4 was a landmark event that opened the door to a new relationship between Islam and the West, precisely because it acknowledged these imperatives. Yet much work needs to be done by both sides.”

“This week in Washington I am participating in the Common Word Initiative, a group of religious leaders hosted by Georgetown University’s Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. While the focus of this initiative has been to foster dialogue between Islam and Christianity, I will call for its expansion to include representatives of all the Abrahamic faiths….”

It’s always worthwhile to listen to Josef Joffe. He appears to believe that Barack Obama is going to have to get tougher. “Has Obama budged the Palestinians? No, they pocketed the gift and asked for more. ‘You showed us the money,’ they responded in so many words, ‘now pay up by putting the squeeze on the Israelis.’ Has it softened Jerusalem? Ask the wildcatting settlers in their illegal outposts. Bibi Netanyahu is worried about push coming to shove, and hence he has dug in.”

Regarding regimes like that of Iran: “This is the ‘rationality of irrationality,’ whereby the ‘patient’ intimidates the would-be therapist with the threat of losing control. ‘Push me, and I’ll do something really crazy’ is the message. Such regimes cooperate a lot more enthusiastically if the fist of power lurks beneath the silky glove of diplomacy…. A reset, no matter how often, doesn’t change the reality inside a computer. The operating system remains the same.”
